Headteacher – Great Sankey Primary School,  Warrington

I am a Headteacher at Great Sankey Primary School in Warrington.

Mathematics is very important at Great Sankey Primary and we are committed to raising standards of effective teaching and learning.

Whilst understanding that children of all ability levels can and do use the materials we chose to identify children at risk of not achieving their potential in English and Mathematics. Children who are not making sufficient progress in mathematics receive extra support and intervention programmes consisting of additional short lessons and opportunities to practice skills. We have found that these children need this extra time and resources carefully matched for their needs. ‘simply’ Maths fulfils this role.

‘simply’ Maths materials are very user friendly, excellent and well-presented key lessons in DVD format and combines with traditional mathematics textbooks. The short lessons on the DVD teach the children well and the textbooks provide the essential practice they need to consolidate their knowledge skills and understanding.

When we trialled ‘simply’ Maths in school we were particularly impressed by the DVDs. The key lessons are delivered by lively and enthusiastic presenters and they really capture the interest and imagination of the children. As the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge said, "Nothing is so contagious as enthusiasm".

Amongst our Year 6 children we almost had an epidemic of enthusiasm! The colourful textbooks complement the DVDs. Each book is well set out and the children quickly became familiar with the format and confident working through the assignments. Children like plenty of 'sums' that they can do. ‘simply’ Maths provides practice in abundance and the children can see what they have achieved.

In conclusion I urge parents to look seriously at ‘simply’ as an effective resource for children to use at home.

Mr J Courtney
